Students Gain Industry Advice at Careers and Employment Expo 2023
A record number of students attended the Careers and Employment Expo 2023, and connected with key players in the experience industry.
The event hosted 25 employers including Accor, Crown Resorts, Emirates Leisure Retail, Hilton, Marriott, Pan Pacific, The Hotel Windsor and Welcome to Travel.
Manager of Learning and Information Services, Dr Paul Kloppenborg said, "It was great to see almost 300 students attend. The Expo is a milestone event for students from all of our teaching areas to obtain career advice from industry stakeholders."
Students took up the suggestion of presenting themselves and their resumés in a professional manner to prospective employees on the day.
Certificate III in Commercial Cooking student Dinesh Selvaraj is aiming to secure a role at a 5-star hotel. "Attending the Expo helped me to learn more about the expectations of possible future employers. I also received feedback on my resume, including needing to add more detail about my experience, which will be valuable when I start applying for jobs," said Dinesh.
After a corporate career in property development while based in the United Kingdom, current Certificate IV in Patisserie student Fortunata Erskine-Nartey said that she is keen to launch her patisserie career. "The Expo has helped me to focus on job hunting and to identify companies where I would like to work, such as The Hotel Windsor. I was pleased to also learn about other organisations that I did not know about and will research these opportunities as well," Fortunata explained.
For business, the annual Careers and Employment Expo offers a chance to meet with potential talent across the foods, hospitality, tourism and events specialisations and promote employment opportunities.
Cluster Talent and Culture Manager for Melbourne Hotels at Accor Louise Nicdao, said that attending the Expo was a good opportunity to explain the diversity of Accor's thirty-five brands around the world to students. She added, "The students were very focused on what type of jobs they want to pursue and we hope to fill roles including in Food and Beverage, housekeeping and as Guest Service Agents."
Brand Ambassador for Emirates Leisure Retail Australia Simon Somo said that they decided to participate in the Expo as they are looking to expand their team. "There is a lot of skilled talent at William Angliss Institute and we are keen to fill a variety of front and back of house roles. The students are really well prepared and asking good questions which reflects their training at the Institute. We have already scheduled interviews with many students during the Expo," added Simon.
Angliss Careers Coordinator Paula Munoz reported that the Expo had strong participation from companies who are interested in working with our students as they are known for their talent and skills.
"It was gratifying to see the strong turnout of the students who took advantage of the opportunity to socialise, exchange ideas and begin building their career pathways beyond graduation," reflected Paula.
For students actively looking for jobs, the Careers & Employment team offer one on one sessions to assist with resume writing and interview preparation. These sessions can be booked via CareerHub.
