Get All the Help You Need from the Student Services Team at Angliss
‘We’re here to help’ was the key message presented by the Student Services Team at William Angliss Institute’s 2021 Orientation. At the virtual event, the team discussed their role and the services available to students. “Our job is to bring value to your study, personal and professional lives,” said Acting Student Opportunities Coordinator Olivia Soekirno.
Student Services offers an array of services and facilities, including the Learning Resource Centre (LRC), otherwise known as the library. “The Learning Resource Centre is your one stop shop for all the resources you need for doing your research,” said Liaison Librarian Giao Kruschina. As well as book, magazines and academic journals, the LRC provides students with computers and study rooms, quiet study zones, media pods for podcasting or presenting work and much more!
The Student Opportunities team looks after the Student Lounge. “It’s your space on campus to come in between classes to relax and hang out with mates,” said Ms Soekirno. The Student Lounge includes a kitchenette, games, table tennis, vending machines and “Grab and Go” breakfasts every Tuesday and Thursday mornings.
Student notice boards in the Student Lounge offer information about student clubs. “Joining clubs and societies is a great opportunity to meet people outside of your classes and to make new friends,” said Ms Soekirno. Students can ask the Student Opportunities team about all the clubs available and how to join.
On the education side of things, Learning Advisors Diane Roddy and Pauline Walker offer free services to students to provide help with understanding assessments and course work, computer and online skills, research help and more. “We have queries right across the board through both Vocational and Higher Education,” said Ms Walker. All students are welcome to acquire about any technological or assessment related questions they may have.
William Angliss Institute offers free, confidential and culturally inclusive Wellbeing and Counselling Services to all students. Students can drop in or book appointments to discuss their needs and options. “Angliss offers free workshops throughout the semester to build tools to use in everyday life to manage mental health and wellbeing, while also building resilience,” said Ms Soekirno.
Access and Disability Liaison Officer Carol Maurici discussed the Access and Disability Services available at the Institute. “We support students who are living with a condition and we work with them to work out a plan to make adjustments so they can study in a way that is fair and accessible,” she said.
When it comes to employability and future careers, the Careers and Employment Team work hard to help students be prepared for the industry. “William Angliss Institute regularly has speakers on campus about their experience in the foods, tourism, hospitality and events industries for students to attend,” said Careers Coordinator Jia Song. “Students can have one-on-one appointments to gain help and advice on their resumes, interview skills, career networking and more.”
CareerHub, an online jobs notice board where job opportunities and upcoming careers events are posted, is also available to students. Students can book appointments with the Careers Team online through CareerHub.
Ms Soekirno ended the panel by discussing Angliss’ love of student involvement. Students can help create and run events, develop communication and leadership skills and receive a volunteer certificate through the new Angliss Vollies Program. “Student Representatives can contribute to an inclusive academic life for peers, sit in on institute boards and provide student voice at decision making level,” Ms Soekirno said.
