Scholarships Supporting Career Goals

Thirty-six students received scholarships at the 2024 William Angliss Institute Scholarship Award Ceremony. These scholarships were made possible by the William Angliss Institute Foundation, long-term partner Nestlé Professional and the Harper family providing the inaugural Harper's Butcher Scholarship.

Angliss Manager of Learning and Information Services Paul Kloppenborg welcomed guests and congratulated students, while former scholarship recipient Ollie Leung spoke of the opportunities from receiving The Nestlé Golden Chefs Hat Scholarship in 2022 and The Sir William Angliss International Merit Scholarships in 2023.

"The scholarships made a world of difference as they not only provided financial relief but allowed me to focus on honing my skills and developing as a chef. I was also able to participate in culinary competitions which were invaluable, not only for my technical skills growth but also for my personal development," explained Ollie.

The ceremony enabled scholarship recipients to meet with fellow beneficiaries, staff and Institute Board members and partners.

The William Angliss Institute Foundation was established in recognition of the pioneering work in the areas of hospitality and foods by the late Sir William Charles Angliss. It offers continuous support to both high-achieving students and those who may need a little extra help to reach their career aspirations.

Bachelor of Tourism student Lachlan Glenk has thoroughly enjoyed his studies and experiencing the tourism industry. "Whether it was an overnight trip to the Great Ocean Road or swimming with dolphins, the ability to meet locals, industry leaders, professionals and like-minded individuals immersed in our field was the best part of my experiences studying at William Angliss Institute," said Lachlan.

He was overjoyed when he heard that he had been chosen for a scholarship as it allows him to focus on the last semester of his degree. "The funds from the scholarship will go towards rent and help me achieve good grades," he added.

Current Master of International Hotel Leadership student Nevina Irawati Lee had a "happy shock" when she found out she was successful in her scholarship application. Aiming to be a leader in the industry, Nevina said the scholarship "Will help me focus on what I love and assist in my academic achievements."

Nevina has developed a strong foundation to enter the world of hospitality having also completed Certificates III & IV in Commercial Cookery and Diploma & Advanced Diplomas in Hospitality Management. In 2023 she was awarded Dux of Bachelor of Resort and Hotel Management.

Inaugural Harper's Butcher Award

Angliss Meat Processing Retail Butcher student Cody Bresser "Felt extremely honoured" to be awarded the inaugural Harper's Butcher Award. "I put a lot of passion and time into my work, so to see it pay off in receiving this Award has given my confidence and belief in my abilities a real boost. The funds will be put towards opening my own shop in the future," Cody said.

The Harper's Butchery Award was established in recognition of Ted Harper's reputation for innovation and quality in retail butchery in Brisbane during the 1960s and 1970s.

Ted was joined by his sons Greg and Ian at the event and said that he was really very impressed by the effort William Angliss Institute had put into celebrating Cody and his achievements.

"I think the Institute is really helping raise the profile of butchery and meat preparation, giving those vocational skills the respect they deserve. My family and I are very pleased to support William Angliss Institute and its talented students, in furthering interest in the meat trades in Australia. We are pleased that the Harper's Butchery Award will assist in that mission over the coming years.

Ted's advice to Cody and future recipients of the Awards is to keep practising and never forget the importance of personality. "It is the butcher's personality and a joke or two, that keeps the customers coming back to buy the products from a butcher shop, as opposed to a supermarket," added Ted.
