Chef Jimmy Han Announced as International Student of the Year - VET

William Angliss Institute alum Chun (Jimmy) Han from Taiwan has been awarded the title of International Student of the Year – Vocational Education and Training at the 2024 Victorian International Education Awards.

These prestigious Study Melbourne Awards honour the outstanding contributions of international students to the Victorian community while also recognising excellence among the state's international education providers and organsations within the sector.

"When I heard that I had won the Study Melbourne International Student of the Year VET Award, I felt an overwhelming sense of joy and pride. It was a recognition of my hard work and dedication," Jimmy said.

Recounting his journey through the Certificate IV in Commercial Cookery and the Diploma of Hospitality Management, he added, "The most rewarding experience at William Angliss Institute was gaining hands-on culinary skills and knowledge, which have provided a strong foundation for my professional career in the culinary industry."

Manager of International Office Clara Cheng praised Jimmy's accomplishments stating, "Jimmy's achievements inspire fellow international students to strive for excellence within Victoria's dynamic culinary scene. He is a true role model for all emerging chefs studying at William Angliss Institute."

Currently Chef de Partie at ARU (The Age Good Food Guide 2004 – One Hat), Jimmy encourages international students to take advantage of every learning opportunity. "Build strong relationships with mentors and peers and gain as much practical experience as possible. Stay curious, be open to diverse cuisines, and focus on honing both technical and soft skills to succeed in the global culinary industry," he advised.

While studying abroad brings unique challenges, Jimmy embraced local culture, sought support from peers and faculty, and mastered time management to balance studies and part-time work.

His dedication has led to accolades including the Nestlé Golden Chef's Hat Award Victoria Regional Champion and the 2023 Nestlé Golden Chef of the Year, Australia's longest running and highly acclaimed competition for young chefs, where he achieved triple gold medals. He was also Highly Commended by the Premier's Award – International Student of the Year judging panel.

Reflecting on his success in the Nestlé Golden Chef's Hat competition, Jimmy shared. "Winning this competition has enhanced my career by boosting my credibility, expanding my network, and increasing media exposure. It has inspired me to innovate in the kitchen leading to collaborations that have advanced my professional journey."

Grateful for the recognition by the 2024 Victorian International Education Awards, he is now focused on further enhancing his skills plus his work at ARU.
