Angliss Butcher Named Australia’s Apprentice of the Year

Congratulations to William Angliss Institute graduate Matthew Tyquin for being named the 2024 Australian Apprentice of the Year at the prestigious Australian Training Awards. Held at the 30th ATA Gala Ceremony in Canberra, the awards celebrate excellence in vocational education and training across the nation.

Matthew earned the national title after being named Victoria's Apprentice of the Year at the 2024 Victorian Training Awards. His back-to-back victories highlight his exceptional dedication, skill and passion for the butchery trade.

Reflecting on the win, he described it as surreal. "To be considered the best among so many other talented and decorated apprentices is such an honour," he shared. "This award rounds off my apprenticeship and highlights what an incredible journey it has been."

A proud representative of both his trade and William Angliss Institute, Matthew credited the Institute's support and industry connections for helping him succeed. "None of this would have been possible without a supportive network," he said, acknowledging his Angliss trainer Peter O'Rourke and his manager from Ashburton Meats Peter Klooster – also an Angliss alumnus - as key mentors who encouraged him to strive for excellence.

Matthew's journey has taken him far beyond the classroom, including representing Australia at the World Butchers' Challenge, an experience he describes as unforgettable. Speaking about his trade, he added, "Butchery should be recognised for what it is—a great industry which really needs more of a workforce."

Apprenticeships Developing a Job-Ready Workforce

His message to young people considering a career in butchery is, "Give it 110% effort, and you'll be amazed by what you gain from your apprenticeship. It's hard work but provides skills not many people possess. Who knows where you might end up." He also encouraged exploration of diverse apprenticeship opportunities, saying, "There are endless opportunities out there for young people and older generations alike. It's never too late to try something new."

This recognition also aligns with William Angliss Institute's celebration of its 85th anniversary in 2025. As Australia's first trade college specialising in butchery, the Institute continues to play a vital role in fostering talent in this essential industry. "It's vital that William Angliss Institute keeps providing excellent care and support to apprentice butchers," Matthew remarked. "TAFE provides hands-on experience, making students job-ready and giving them real-world skills."

Matthew's award has earned him a place on the ATA 2025 Honour Roll, a significant personal milestone. The Institute was also recognised on the ATA 2021 Honour Roll as Large Provider of the Year at the ceremony.

As we look forward to the next chapter in our rich history, Matthew's achievement serves as an inspiring example of the possibilities available through hard work, mentorship, and the world-class training provided at William Angliss Institute.
